Wax Paper Resist Technique

The technique for this fortnight's ATC class is Wax Paper Resist.  It's another background technique using wax paper (which has only JUST been available here again within the last couple of weeks here in Australia - Coles have it).  The wax paper is run through a Cuttlebug/Big Shot and then that is ironed onto card stock  -  glossy or plain  -  and the design of the embossing folder will act as a resist when you then add colour to the card.  I have used my favourite inks - Distress Ink Pads for this technique as I love the colours and the effect is just gorgeous!  Firstly though, here's the remaining ATC's from the previous Texture Paste & Stencils class.

 Below are the samples for the Wax Paper Resist class.  As you can see, you can either stamp onto the background or you can use an image on it.  It's a very subtle technique and doesn't overwhelm whatever you put on top.  You'll see that I've used the same embossing folder for all these four samples.  I'll use others during my class so my next post will have different designs on the background.

Texture Paste

I used Texture Paste on my very first book cover and we are now up to Book Number 10!  On the previous cover we stamped into the texture paste, this time we'll be using it with stencils or simply using it to, well, add texture!   I stumbled across some recipes for home-made texture paste so thought I'd give this a go.  So I mixed up the correct quantities of the ingredients and I couldn't work out why, when I'd stirred it and mixed it thoroughly, it was rising up in the jar like bread dough on fast forward.   Hmmm... something wasn't right.  I had to keep stirring it to make it go back down but eventually it did settle ok and I could add a little paint to it to colour it so that was all good.  It wasn't until a few days later that I had an AHA!!! moment and worked out that in the USA, Baking Soda is actually Bi-carb Soda here in Australia, not Baking Powder (which is what I used).  So that solved the puffing up dilemma.  At least it still worked out alright and I know that the girls will be able to make their own texture paste if they run out of the store-bought one.  There is also available now more texture paste available from different companies and one that I do like very much is the Ferro ones as they are coloured.  I have the metallic iron one and the antique gold.  Those samples will be added later as I'll be  doing them as demo's in the classes.  In the meantime, here are some other samples and the book cover for Technique Book Number 10.

 

These are all created on Kraft coloured card stock, with some white and one other colour paint and a little black stamping.  I liked the simplicity of combining just a few colours.  If you want to try out the recipe for yourself, the one I used is:

 

HOMEMADE TEXTURE PASTE

1 Part White Acrylic Paint

1 Part Talcum Powder (or Baking Soda, called bi-carb soda in Australia)

1/2 Part White Glue (PVA)

Mix together in a re-sealable jar.  Add a little coloured

paint if you want to make coloured texture paste.  (I do this

on a plastic plate with just a little of the paste as I didn't want to

colour all of it.)

I'm not sure how long this mix will last, mine has been in

the jar for a week and a half and it's still fine.

Textured Book Cover Giveaway and Metalllic Acetate ATC's

The repeat class of the Texture Paste Cover & sample atc's was well received by the girls. I first did this class around 18 months ago and have had a small band of women who've been nagging to do a repeat as they missed it first time around. If you nag, I respond!!! Wait....no I don't!!! Whatever, sometimes I respond and sometimes I don't.


So this means I have 3 textured book covers to give away on my blog. The dimensions are approximately 8" wide x 6" high (or 20.5cm x 15cm if you're that way inclined). It is created on chipboard and is easy to punch a hole through if that's what you want to do to make it into a book cover.
The draw will be on Friday the 12th of March.

#1 - Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold & Dioxazine Purple (both Golden paints), then White Fire Treasure Gold rubbed lightly over the top to show the highlights.

#2 - Turquois Phthalo & Quinacridone Magenta then dry-brushed lightly with Interference Silver to pick up the highlights (these are all Golden paints again).

#3 - Titan Buff, Burnt Umber Light and Burnt Umber then dry-brushed with Iridescent Bronze Fine & a little Interference Gold Fine (once again, Golden paints). This one definitely looks better in the flesh, more like shimmery brown goodness, less like smeared dog poo.

The atc below is a sample one from the same Texture Paste Class. I used the beautiful Black Texture Paste in a tube and "piped" the tree freehand. It also has some Frayed Burlap Distress Stickles and is on a painted background of Texture Paste that has been tapped with my finger to gain the texture.

Okay, my next atc class coming up for this fortnight was going to be KISS technique, unfortunately my style of stamps that I use doesn't really lend itself to this technique very well. It's more suited to solid simple shapes like flowers, pears etc.....I don't have a lot (ANY!!!) of those so I had to come up with something else quick smart. Thinking, thinking, thinking.....what do I love.....paint - yep!...backgrounds - yep!....foolproof & easy - yep! So Metallic Acetate it is!!! This is another of those backgrounds that must be seen to be appreciated. A note to the girls who see them in the shop, please leave a comment and tell everyone else how amazing this background is in real life! Please! Begging is not pretty!!!

More Microscope Slides & another giveaway coming!

Following on from my last post, here are some more microscope slide atc's. All of these slides have been wrapped with the cheap version of the foil tape that was mentioned in my previous post.

Last of the Coloured Gloss & Texture Paste atc's

I thought I'd post the last few pictures of the Coloured Gloss Card atc technique from the classes that were held last Tuesday night and Thursday morning. Some of the girls have done the painting of their Texture Paste covers from the first class and boy, are they looking wonderful!!! All that great texture and some really cool colour combinations have been created by the girls. These are the last few atc's using the Coloured Gloss Card technique.

"Encircle"... the girl is a Stampotique stamp - Prom Queen.

Here's another picture of "Encircle"...I took this one with my camera (the last one was scanned) as I wanted to show the little bees that I stamped with Brilliance Galaxy Gold as it's one of the very few pigment inks that will dry on gloss card. You can't see them on the scanned image, it just looks like I've stuck 5 swarovski crystals on randomly but I placed them in the centre of the bees. The colour in the one above is much closer to what it actually is.

"Full-orbed moon"... the moon is stamped with Brilliance Platinum Planet (how fitting!)

"Sanctuary"... the messy bit down the bottom is gauze. I drew a nest and it looked like a toddler had scribbled on my card so of course, it had to be fixed! Graphite glimmer mist sprayed on some gauze and then stuck down with some gel medium and it's all fixed, adds a nice textural element too!

"Wild & Crazy"...another couple of Stampotique stamp girls (Glimmering Hope & Girl with a lunchbox). I tried out the new Ranger Distress Stickles in Frayed Burlap in the circles, looks kinda cool...not too glittery but very textural.

I posted the Texture Paste Covers off to the winners of my blog giveaway last week and also included an atc with them too, but don't tell the girls that.....it's a surprise! lol I also found an extra cover that I had made but hadn't painted so did another quick random draw and Debbi Baker was the winner of that one. I emailed Debbi and asked her what colour she'd like and she picked my favourite combo of Quinacridone Nickel Azo Gold & Dioxazine Purple so hers has also gone postal along with the others. I've been working on my next class, Embossing Techniques and will post these when I have some more samples done, the plan is over the weekend to get it all done & dusted! We'll see!!! I'll be using a couple of things for embossing that are not normal embossing items. Stay tuned.

A free give-away (blog candy), more Texture Paste Covers & atc's, canvases

Texture Paste class at Scraptivate is over, I've completed 4 of the covers in the classes as well as made numerous atc's using various ways of applying texture paste. Because I do a sample of the ATC Technique Book Cover in each class, then also paint the previous dried sample, I've ended up with 4 of the Texture Paste Covers for the book. They are 6" x 8" in size and I've decided that I don't need them all so I'm going to give 2 of the new ones away.....your choice! You can use it as a cover for a book yourself or whatever you want, cut it up, wipe your feet on it, whatever! lol

I also did some more atc's as samples and raffles for the classes. The effect of Glimmer Mist sprayed on dry texture paste is gorgeous, especially when the texture past doesn't cover the whole card as the card absorbs the mist differently than the non-texture pasted areas. Here are a couple of retro ones using the Glimmer Mists.

Yesterday I had a catch-up with some of my arty friends, these are the girls who meet up (or try to!) once a month for a few entertaining hours of laughter, gossip, support and sometimes even art! We have made a committment to do better in the "art" department this year...starting with a shadow-box canvas. Anyway, for a Christmas gift swap this year we did 4"x4" mini canvases to swap. Here is the one I did that Lyn received. (I'll put up the one I received in my next post - can't find the camera.)

Lastly, here is an uncompleted 4"x4" canvas where I've used the Golden Crackle Paste over part of the canvas and just had a paint play with some greens and paynes gray. Not sure what to do with the rest of it but it'll come to me eventually. For now I'm happy just to look at the texture.
