DISTRESS OXIDES & WEBBING SPRAY

Webbing Spray by Krylon is a fantastic product that has been around for a long time and has such a grungy look and feel to it that it just adds that something extra to an existing background.  Once again we'll be using the new Ranger Distress Oxide inks but this time on gloss photo paper.  They do react very differently when you do the "smoosh" technique with the Distress Oxides onto the photo paper and then when dry, wipe them off with a baby wipe.  This removes the oxidisation from the pigment inks and leaves a more vivid looking background.  Over the top of these backgrounds I've sprayed black webbing spray.  

You really only need the one colour of webbing spray (it's available in black, white, gold, silver, green and red) because if you have some embossing powder at the ready, as soon as you've sprayed your colour, quickly dump on embossing powder in a different colour, tap off the excess and heat.... voila, a different colour of webbing spray!  Make sure your background is really dry to prevent the embossing powder from sticking to the Distress Oxide inks!

I'd fallen behind a bit in making sample atc's for in my own book but have now caught up and surprise, surprise....I'm even ahead now!!! I've made 7 atc's today that have fabric transfers and beading on them. That's the next class coming up. The girls will need to bring their good glasses to be able to see the beading needle and little beads!

Webbing Spray ATC's

After a wonderful 2 days spent with Jen Crossley & Dawnie in Ballarat at yes, a previous house of "ill-repute" (pics to follow!), then 4 days at the Creative Soul Retreat at The Country Place in the Dandenong's in Victoria, then a 9 day drive from Melbourne along the Great Ocean Road to Adelaide.....I'm home! I'm having a few modem issues so this blog post is a bit late. I have yet to upload my pics from the camera with previous mentioned massage house in Ballarat as well as pics of the retreat so these may be in the next post....possibly....don't hold me to it.

We have a bit of an exciting day happening this Saturday (10th April) and as we are so close to it, and also as none of my family actually read my blog, I can tell you it's my son's wedding! It's a big surprise, starts out as an engagement party (for only an hour), then the wedding kicks in. Hopefully to the total surprise of everyone attending!

Anyway, back to the reason for this blog post. The technique I'm currently teaching in my atc classes is webbing spray. I like to use webbing spray on all sorts of backgrounds, credit card technique, smoosh technique, resin fresco, in fact any background will benefit from a little spray with the web. If you only have one can of it in a particular colour (it comes in gold, silver, black & white), then if you're quick you can pour embossing powder over the webbing spray immediately after spraying as it stays wet long enough to grab the powder, heat it and you've changed the colour!

Even a simple glimmer mist background looks better with a little webbing spray. Steel and Poe above are both done on plain copy paper with Graphite glimmer mist and then black webbing spray. Length of life, For Sale and Risque are all done with gold webbing spray then coated with Antique Brown (a combo of copper and black powders) embossing powder.

Glad to be home in my own bed and after Saturday my life will settle back down again....phew!

Webbing Spray, Crackle & Award

Well, with all the blogs that I have been visiting this little award has popped up numerous times so I'd just be sending it back to the same people again so I'm going to cheat a little here and just say ....go visit my favourite blogs link down the side and take your pick!!! Blogging has bought all types of people together and though we may not all like, or be inspired by what other people do, it's good to know that there's someone out there that you can connect with. How boring and predictable if we all liked the same stuff anyway!


We had a little chat about this last night at my webbing spray atc class. One of the girls had seen Sweeney Todd and was not at all thrilled with the blood and gore aspect of it but one of the other girls said she and her girlfriend just about laughed all the way through! Takes all types in this World and I, for one, am EXTREMELY happy about this!!! lol I have yet to see this but I just know I'm just gonna love it.....are you surprised???


Onto some arty stuff.....as I said, last night's atc class was on webbing spray. We used a couple of different techniques of laying down the first lot of colour for the background before using the webbing spray. First was Tim's "smoosh" method.....distress ink pads "dtcs" (that's direct-to-craft-sheet) on the Ranger craft sheet, spritz with water, lay down cartridge paper, pat down, twist 45 degrees while on craft sheet, then lift....amazing coloured background. One of the girls, Nicola, used Spiced Marmalade and Fired Brick.....OMG!!! This looked like a fabulous sunset!!! My favourite colour combo for this technique is Peeled Paint & Weathered Wood but thought I'd step outside my comfort zone and try Vintage Photo and Broken China. Here's the 8" x 11" sheet with that colour, also with the black webbing spray added...

If you still have some of the ink and water left on the craft sheet you can do it a second time using another piece of paper and this will give a completely different effect. This is the result of the remaining ink/water "smoosh"....

The second type of background we did was with the Glimmer Mists , these are new spray colours with a wonderful shimmer that we've had at Scraptivate for a little while. The colours on this one are Latte and Patina. No webbing spray on this one yet...

This is the raffle atc for last night......just a little big of fighting over who was going to go home with Johnny! Do you like the little shrink plastic heart?


This next atc is for the Crackle Technique class that's just over a week away. We'll be using the Helmar 2 step crackle over images and the Distress Crackle Paint as well as the Crackle Accents.

Where in the World & webbing spray

I thought I'd take this opportunity to join an easy Crusade on Michelle Ward's Street Team this month.....entitled Where in the World? As vast as this big old planet is, the internet has certainly drawn like-minded souls together and for a visual art form, it couldn't be more perfect, well, maybe except for when they do that hologram 3-d thing eventually!!!

So I'm an Aussie, born in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. Perth is the most isolated capital city in the World, which I think personally is a good thing! We have mild winters, no snow over on this side of Australia as we have no mountains, just hills. But our summers can get pretty hot - several days in a row of 40+ Centigrade is common each summer, but at least it is a dry heat - not much humidity though that is changing as the years go by....thank you global warming!!! NOT!!! Christmas is our hot time of the year so pictures of snowmen & people all rugged up makes us break out into a sweat, sorry...perspire, forgot for a moment that ladies perspire, they don't sweat...yeah, right!

I've always lived in Perth but spent one year living in Wittenoom with my family when I was 7. Yes, THE Wittenoom, town of the great asbestos debacle. The 2 room school I went to had asbestos strewn around the playground and we were always picking up chunks of asbestos rocks and peeling back the fibres, it was also throughout our gardens..... shameful huh! I have also spent some months hitch-hiking (which you wouldn't do now) around up North of Western Australia when I was a teenager too - you know, that period when you are around 18/19 and you are trying to "find" yourself??? Don't think I did, but I had a good time!

I'm a Perth-ite through-and-through, love this city on the Swan River with it's magnificent beaches (that I used to go to when younger - can't stand the sand now.....what a "girl", lol), the proximity to the fabulous wine country down south and the overall relaxed mode of the people here. Think the population of Perth is just over 1 million now, considering we have around 21 million in the whole of Australia, we are isolated.....and loving it! Now onto the final webbing spray atc for this coming Saturday's class, actually MAYBE the final one as I may yet do more???

Just goes to show you that you don't have to use lots of webbing spray to get a good look! This is a little bit of black onto a pre-prepared background using glued down old torn papers (that you can't see) and texture paste that has been cut into and smooshed around with an old credit card, dried, then painted with the FolkArt Metallic Paint in Pearl White.

I'm also doing a few bits & pieces for Xmas for various girls, so hopefully I'll get them scanned or photographed before giving them away.....back to the studio!

Webbing Spray & a couple more colourwash atc's

I ordered a new stamp and absolutely LOVE how it turned out on this colourwash background! It's from Stampotique and is called "glimmering hope" (type the name in the search box on their website to find it)....cool name for a creepy cool stamp, or, as I prefer spooky cute! It's on a background of matte white card stock with some lettuce & butterscotch colours of the Ranger Colourwashes. Main thing to remember about these is WEAR GLOVES!!! Unless you don't mind multi-hued hands for several days that is.



I was really impressed with how fantastic the white embossing powder just jumps out from the background. The words Strange Reality have been stamped on white shrink plastic and shrunk (obviously!). You have to stamp her out on a larger piece of card to see her full beauty as she's a little large for an atc, she's 5" high.









Similar colouring in the next one, I'm not generally a green person unless it's an olive/khaki sort of colour but the combo of lettuce & butterscotch is just too gorgeous to ignore. The green I don't really like is more a lawn-coloured green. Maybe I like my lawn to be dying off in parts - hence the butterscotch! lol Once again, the wording (Life's Journey) has been stamped on white shrink plastic that has been coloured with those magic coloured sharpies then blended with blending solution.



The next atc class on Saturday is using webbing sprays. We have white, black, gold and silver in store and they are really easy to use. I do my spraying into a large spray box - actually a large shoe box with an attached lid, it's also where I do my colourwash sprays as well....keeps it all nice and contained and not all over your table.

Here are a couple that I've made for Saturday, one more is being finished today and I'll put that one up when I post next.

Next one is a little hard to see the white webbing spray on the dark gray background as the image in the frame is a transparency and I've mounted it onto foam tape so it has a fair amount of depth, which the scanner struggles with!
